PREFACE
Mr. A.B. Vajpayee was sworn in as the Prime Minister of India in May 1996. But he failed to gather majority support. Therefore, he resigned after 13 days.
In 1997, he led the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) and got majority support. He was sworn in as the Prime Minister of India on 15 March 1997 .
He wanted to establish himself as a strong leader. A series of actions -nuclear explosions and missile tests- and some incidents- for instance Kargil War- secured him a place in the mind of the people.
In April 1999, Miss. J. Jayalalitha withdrew the support of her party -AIADMK- to the 13-month old government without any reasonable cause. Some people felt that the ruling class prevailed upon her to withdraw her support to him. In the ensuing confidence motion, the Government lost by a single vote.
During his 13 month rule, he did not reveal his mind to the people.
This work deals with his governance during this period.
